On the Mass Effect movie
Gotta be completely honest - the news has completely destroyed any interest I may have had in it. Sorry if that makes me no better than the people complaining in the comm.

Same here. There is no way this can end in anything but horrible.

If they were gonna do a movie, hell, I'd take a Kahlee Sanders story instead. Bleh.

Yeah, same here.

I'm undecided what irks me the most about it - their blase attitude to addressing the male/female issue, the "oh no it's another white male space marine" thing, my inherant "abloobloo wai no femshep" stuff, the fact that it takes away the series' focus on choice and customisation, or half a dozen other things.

I second the bleh.

I kept telling a bunch of people on the BSN that the best way to make their points known about this is to speak with their wallets... if the movie ever gets made.

I only say that, because if Halo -a cultural juggernaut for a few good years back then- hasn't had a movie made of it by now, then Mass Effect will more than likely be stuck in development hell for the exact same reasons: the budget.

That's a very good point actually. I imagine Mass Effect would require even more money than a Halo movie - Halo could at least do a lot of location shooting due to the more gritty, realistic design.

Mass Effect is so sleek and shiny that almost every location would have to be CGI or purpose-built sets. Add all the different aliens, and we're looking at a massive amount of expendeture.

This is why games can do what movies can't...

Yep. Krogans, turians and salarians would probably be all CGI and I guess asari would have some added effects to them too (not gonna lie: if they got the Sucker Punch/Green Lantern people to do those guys, that would be rather cool). That's a lot of money right there as it is. Then the environments, special effect, ect... it adds up pretty quickly.

I don't really see this movie getting pretty far. There's too much stacked up against it. And I hope it remains in Development Hell for a good few years yet.

Heh, kinda messed up to *want* a movie to stay in development hell, but I'm with you on that.

Maybe if it takes a while to get off the ground, they'll change their minds about the plot because Shepard will be old news...

...orrrr will think it's okay to use Shepard because no one will care anymore. Hmm.

Asari would definitely be the easiest to do - just need a bigger budget version of what Samara's face model did for her cosplay. But the others would need to be CGI. I mean, if there were only one or two of them, animatronics would be a better bet, but as soon as a few of them are needed, the cost shoots up, so CGI would need to be used anyway, then they wouldn't match, yadda yadda yadda.

You'd think they would just go for an original story - using Shepard a) pisses off a lot of the game fans, and b) means nothing to people who haven't played the game. While an original character would a) be more easily accepted by fans of the game, and b) still mean nothing to people who haven't played the game.

The only real difference with using Shepard is that fans of the game will dig their heels in - the mainstream audience wouldn't know the difference.
